Bedecked in archaic charms, clad in runes, and wrapped in free-flowing robes to allow for the somatic components of their spells, wizards are a veritable thunderstorm of lethal powers who can strike from close or long range. There is no safe way to approach an angry wizard.

Rebel of the Arcane

Rumors from Caldeum detail the events surrounding a certain brash student of the sorcerous arts�a promising, even brilliant, pupil, but one whose unbridled ambitions have led to violence and disorder in the respected schools of that august city. This young woman was trained by some of the most skilled mages in the world, but rather than follow their guidance, she chose to display an uncooperative spirit, constantly pushing past their restrictions in pursuit of knowledge that they claimed she was not prepared for.

This behavior resulted in censure and reprimands, but nothing seemed to bar her from her course. In the end, she insinuated her way into the hallowed aisles of the Ancient Repositories and was there confronted by the great Vizjerei mage Valthek. The altercation turned violent, resulting in costly damage to the building, the destruction of many irreplaceable artifacts, and the humiliation of an honored sorcerer. This rebel student, calling herself a wizard, disappeared into the shadows and is considered still at large.

The actions of a single soul can have far-reaching consequences, whether intended or not.

As is the nature of such rumors, they have grown wilder and more fantastical with every telling. Sources from the Yshari Sanctum in Caldeum speak of an underground movement, a band of young students who have taken inspiration from these stories. These dissenters have adopted the epithet of "wizard" as a badge of honor. They gather in secret, with no official organization or figurehead�just a collection of rebellious youth excited by the prospects of knowledge and power.

The elders of sorcery and the arcane arts throughout Caldeum are greatly concerned about this rising tide. They believe that the powers of divination and conjuration should be placed only in the hands of those who have proven their steadfastness and righteous dedication to the betterment of humankind. Scholars have perfected the paths toward these abilities over centuries, paths requiring patience and forbearance as well as intelligence. The elders fear that the wizards mean to mock these great lessons, to run when they should walk. They fear that such intellect and ambition fueled with arcane power could endanger all of Sanctuary.

Astrologists have recently brought alarming news to the scholars of Caldeum: a sign of dire portent has marked the night sky, and all eyes are turned toward the quiet land of Khanduras. Now the promise of knowledge, mystery, and treasure may prove too tempting for these upstart wizards to resist.

Seraphine (VA = Sarah Emi Bridcutt)  is the heroine of the game. She comes from an upper-class family, and is the demon lord of the Gorgeous Underworld. She is runaway, rebelling her parents� wishes to get into a political marriage.

Diablo 3 Character Hero Monk

The monks. Holy warriors who believe that the madness and chaos of Sanctuary are destined to be brought into order, and that it is their sacred mission to assist their thousand and one gods in doing so. Arrayed in the fiery colors of Ytar, the fire god, monks draw from their years of intense training and meditation to become masters of melee combat. While proficient with many types of weapons� staves, blades, maces and spears, monks have no real need for such crude tools. Their discipline has honed both body and mind into living instruments of divine justice.


Fist of the Gods

In the cold northern lands of Ivgorod, hidden amongst the peaks of the Kohl Mountains that run from the Sharval Wilds and up along the shadow of the Dreadlands, are the monasteries of the Veradani monks. Apart from housing a veritable army of fighters, teachers, and acolytes, these austere and remote locations contain the collective wisdom that the order has gathered over long centuries.

As the militant arm of the Sahptev faith, the Veradani monks are priest-warriors who follow the divine injunctions of their Patriarchs, the rulers of Ivgorod. Known as the "City of the Patriarchs," Ivgorod is a religious oligarchy that, in ages past, held sway over a vast domain stretching to the deserts of Aranoch. The depredations of war and political turmoil have taken their toll since then, and now this holy city is all that remains of a once-great civilization.

The monks of Ivgorod present a unique profile among the leather and iron-clad peoples of the Western Kingdoms. They eschew heavy armor, relying on supernatural speed and catlike reflexes to avoid attack. Their foreheads are marked with two crimson circles, symbols that display their understanding of the balance between darkness and light, and icons of the Veradani order. The monk is a warrior of light, but one who can comprehend the darkness� and use that knowledge to utterly destroy it.

Now, as demonic forces rise across the world, the Patriarchs have dispatched their most vigilant disciples to purge the evil at its source and usher in the divine will of the thousand and one Sahptev gods.

The barbarians. Mighty warriors whose strength and ferocity are a match for any foe, whether slavering beast or foul demon. Tall, broad, and rippling with muscle, the barbarian can bear a heavy weapon too large for a commoner to lift, or wield two full-sized armaments�one in each hand�with wickedly lethal purpose. In the wild and monstrous lands of Sanctuary, there is nothing more frightening than a barbarian with a dry blade.


Vagabond Warriors of Arreat

Since time immemorial, sacred Mount Arreat was known as the resting place for an artifact of untold power, an artifact vital to the very existence of humanity, known as the Worldstone. The guardians of this revered place were the barbarian tribes of the Northern Steppes, led by their enigmatic and legendary king, Bul-Kathos. Rumors abound of this primal barbarians great size and strength. Some tales say he was nephalem, the self-appointed protector of the Worldstone. Regardless, the barbarians refer to themselves as the "Children of Bul-Kathos," and none can deny the tangible witness they bear to his mighty stature, or the valiant resolve with which they performed their vigil.

Their charge transformed the barbarians from simple farm folk to nomadic zealots�faithful warriors who roamed the boundaries of their realm with tireless watchfulness. The barbarians fulfilled their purpose with unwavering determination for centuries, dwelling in a pristine state of isolation. Anything that could lead toward distraction or weakness was pushed aside, including politics, magic, trade, and machinery. Tribes patrolling Mount Arreat brooked no intrusion from outsiders, without question or parley. It was a pure existence, a life committed to the sword, axe, spear, shield, and duty above all else.

Everything changed after Baal and his demonic army fought their way to the Worldstone. The Prime Evil corrupted the artifact so that it would spread his darkness to all of humanity. In a desperate attempt to stop the legions of Hell, the archangel Tyrael hurled his divine sword at the Worldstone, destroying it� and Mount Arreat. In one disastrous moment, the barbarians vigil was ended. The shame and sacrilege of this unholy event have shattered the barbarian tribes into a crumbling echo of their broken mountain.

The guardians of Arreat are scattered. Those who survived Arreats fall wander the ruined lands of the north, aimless and inconsolable now that their cause is gone. Some have fallen to madness or worse.

And now a star has fallen to the south, in the humble town of New Tristram. There, dark forces have awoken, and the need for strong arms and heroic hearts is great. For the wandering barbarians, there is hope that this event might bring a new charge, a new vigil, and perhaps some new purpose to their lives.

The witch doctors. Sage conjurers, enchanters, and mystical warriors who are driven by a charge to maintain spiritual balance and harmony in the violent world of Sanctuary. They command ancient magics rooted in the primal powers of life and death, and are adept at summoning fearsome, shadowy creatures. A witch doctor is armed with simple talismans, fetishes, rough carvings... and endless ravening throngs of vengeful spirits set to bring destruction at their masters command.


Champions of the Unformed Land

The dark and distant lands of the eastern continent are home to countless mysteries and exotic cultures with strange and frightening ways. Beyond the deserts of Aranoch, across the Twin Seas, and deep within the teeming jungles of Toraja lie the vast tribal territories of the Teganze. There the umbaru people live, much as they have for centuries, in a nomadic state of hunting, spiritual musing, and constant savage warfare.

War amongst the tribes of the umbaru is a ceremonial affair, a ritualized part of everyday life that allows each tribe to vie for respect, honor, and acclaim in the eyes of their gods. Enemies taken in battle are then deemed worthy of sacrifice, and their lives are given to the umbaru deities�powerful spirits who reign over the Unformed Land.

Known as the Mbwiru Eikura to the tribes of the Teganze, the Unformed Land is believed to be the true and sacred reality, the purest form of existence. To the umbaru, their mortal duration is but a pale shadow of the Unformed Land, a testing ground for those wishing to ascend to the higher plane. And only the witch doctors are able to look upon the Mbwiru Eikura, through mastery of potent herbs, bloody rituals, and an intense focus known as the Ghost Trance. Their combined spiritual and military acumen has earned the witch doctors a place of status and reverence amongst the tribes. Theirs is a calling that requires an incredible degree of courage, self-sacrifice, wisdom, and foresight.

It is that same sense of foresight that has brought the umbarus attention to the distant village of New Tristram. The Ghost Trance has revealed terrible signs and portents for Sanctuary and the Unformed Land. Only the boldest of witch doctors would dare cross the far horizons to the west, braving incalculable odds to bring answers back to their tribe.

The demon hunters. Vengeful harbingers of righteous doom who bring swift judgment and death to the hellish creatures daring enough to trespass on the mortal lands of Sanctuary. Skilled archers, assassins, and trackers, demon hunters are perfectly honed instruments set to scour demons from the world. The fact that every last one of them has a deep and personal motivation to do so only sharpens their deadly purpose.

The Enemy Within

Very little is known about the secret society of demon hunters. While not native to the region, this elusive cadre of warriors has chosen to root its forces amidst the ruins of a forgotten city located in the Dreadlands. Apprentices come from every corner of the land, all bearing the scars of demonic attack�all seething with hatred for the hellspawn that left their twisted mark. The recruiters know that only those with a personal vendetta will be driven enough to complete the harsh training required to stand as a true demon hunter.

Neophyte hunters are trained merely by surviving in the demon-infested wastes of the Dreadlands. Practiced in the subtle arts of knife and crossbow, the demon hunter learns how to dodge monstrous blows with acrobatic skill�and return them with sharp-bladed fury. These delicate weapons require masterful finesse, but they allow demon hunters to bring death to their targets with surgical precision.

This precision requires a level of mental focus that is unique to the demon hunters. In combating their monstrous quarry, they are taught to bridle their hatred and channel it to become a superhuman weapon of willpower and discipline. It is the only way to counter the vicious psychic attacks that demons make when they prey on mortals weaknesses and fears. A powerful demon hunter can turn such attacks around on their unsuspecting enemies, hitting them where they have no defense.

Every demon hunter has a network of eyes and ears, a dependable crew of watchers, spies, and informers stationed across the length and breadth of Sanctuary. Once a demonic incursion is spotted, the demon hunters arrive with surprisingly swift and lethal intent. The recent news from New Tristram of a fallen star and walking dead has caught the attention of these shadowy warriors. They have sent the best from amongst their ranks to deal with the situation. And demon hunters deal in only one form of currency.
