Toshiba has unboxed its new Laptop model Toshiba Portege R700-S1310. It features Protect and Fix with hard drive protection designed to help protect your laptop and its data in the case of a fall.

As well as being thin and light, the chassis is incredibly tough. Only the lid feels flimsy, but is in fact designed to flex under pressure, reducing the risk of cracking.

The 13.3-inch screen uses transflective LED screen technology for optimum visibility indoors and out, and the panel provides great colour and contrast.

Usability is less impressive, although this could be a result of our pre-production test machine, with the isolated-style keyboard proving one of the spongiest weve used.

To keep the chassis as light as possible, a 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD) has been used rather than a standard 2.5-inch hard drive. While SSDs are less prone to data loss caused by knocks and bumps and also provide very fast access to your data, the limited storage space is an unfortunate trade-off.

More pleasing is the fact that Toshiba has managed to squeeze a DVD rewriter into such a small laptop, for read/write access to CDs and DVDs.

Connectivity is also top-notch, courtesy of 802.11n Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet. Theres also a 3G module for wireless broadband access.

Even at this pre-production stage, were very impressed by the Portege R700. While there are a few minor niggles, were confident they will all be resolved for mass-production and this is sure to be a big winner for Toshiba.Toshiba Portege R700-S1310 Specifications:

Price : $1,449.99 from [sony.laptops]This is a good midrange entry from Sony. I like that the body is made of a Magnesium alloy, it really feels sturdy to the touch and stays very cool. It is fairly light weight for a 15.4 inch Laptop and has a good low profile. The battery life however seems to be about average.

The good news though is that it is a fairly powerful laptop. The 2.0ghz T7250 is a great processor and enables the user to do a great deal of multitasking. The video card is integrated and derives its video memory from the system memory, so the 2GB of RAM gets a little stretched. Youll be able to play medium intensity games, but dont expect to crank up the graphics to 11 and see smooth rendering. Though since it is a mid range laptop I hope that no one intends on doing that anyway.

The storage space is good, you can get about as many songs and movies as I would expect you would need at one time on the 250GB drive. That being said I would immediately clear out much of Sonys preinstalled trial ware. Much of it runs in the system tray or background and slows things down. Graphics- As Toshiba Satellite L755-S5216 is a budget laptop, you can’t expect discrete gaming graphics. Commonly low end laptops with Sandy Bridge Processor come with Integrated Intel GMA HD 2000 or 3000 graphics. Actually the graphics is integrated with processor core to enhance performance. Also, such graphics can share cache memory. From performance point of view, the graphics is equal to entry level dedicated graphics so it lets you play many 3D games, like Dirt3 and Crysis 2, from low to medium details and settings.
