Asus Sabertooth Z87 LGA 1150 Motherboard

Asus Sabertooth Z87 LGA 1150 Motherboard

This motherboard is great.
Fairly affordable, very sleek, and tons of features!

Thanks to the new chipset, there are a lot more native SATA ports that are ALL 6 gb/s!
The motherboard is great for SLI and Crossfire. Its UEFI is great, user friendly, and easy to explore around.

Dust caps are included, and a huge 5 year warranty! This thing is truly TUF.
Again, nice job Asus. Wonderful, excellent motherboard, outstanding support, and I cant wait what what else I can do with it.

Review about Asus Sabertooth Z87 LGA 1150 Motherboard

This motherboard works as good as it looks. It looks and feel military grade. It has no flex due to the steel plate on the bottom. It fits perfectly in the case and it is very well laid out. It has more accessories that a Vegas show girl. But the best part is the ease of setup and the thought that went into this board. My favorite feature (which I am happy to say I didnt not have to use) is the button on the board that when pressed, will try and determine the correct DDR3 setting for thee RAM you installed if it fails POST boot. The GUI BIOS are a great new feature and no doubt where the industry will be heading. There are no BIOS updates yet, but they give you 3 ways to flash them including booting from the bios and simply sticking in a flash drive with the file on it. No more booting to a floppy, CD or thumb drive!

This was by far the easiest and most trouble free PC build I have ever done and I have done many. I am into this new build 3 days now and could not be happier. My fastest reboot time so far, from clicking on restart to a sign on screen was about 20 seconds. Yes I have a i7 4th Gen, and SSD drive and 32 GB of RAM, but some boards like my Gigabyte GA-X58 with similar config took forever to POST. Some MB makers are better than others are eliminating unnecessary boot up checks, like seeking every USB device as Gigabyte does. Asus nailed this and POST is the fastest I have ever seen at just a few seconds. It actually boots faster than some virtual machines on industrial grade servers we have at work where POST isnt an issue.

I could not be more pleased at this point except for one thing. I really didnt need or want to build a new system, but my wife spilled water into the top of my old one. Smoke and a lot mumbling followed. But everything was backed up, so all is well . . .

7/7/2013 Update:
A few days into using this build I noticed some instability with devices plugged into the USB3 ports. .

Features:

  • Tuf Engine Power Design
  • Ultimate Cool Thermal Solution
  • We Got Your Back Shape Force

ASUS N550JV DB72T 15 6 Inch Touchscreen Laptop

ASUS N550JV-DB72T 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

Ok, so for about the past 3 months Ive been researching various laptops at around 1k for my first year of college.
This was the first one to have everything I wanted-
4th gen Haswell Quad Core
Good enough battery life
Touch Screen at 1920x1080
A good enough dedicated graphics card (gt750m)

The reason i give this 3 stars are because of various flaws I found with it.
The first one I ordered got here in a day. It was a amazing computer, well built, good audio, great screen, battery life. The nvida card was giving me trouble and after a session of Crysis 2, the gt750ms driver reported error code 043, which essentialy means it died. I sent it back and got a new one same day from amazon and starting dealing with new issues.

My new issues were the 5400rpm hard-drive and the networking card.

The HDD is just too slow for my tastes, Ive grown up on 7200rpm emachines and have a OCZ solid state drive in my desktop. it is simply too slow and I plan on replacing it if I can stay within warranty.

The Networking card (Qualcom Artheros Ar9485wb-eg) is also really slow. It takes a full minute to download 1000kb of data. Both the original and the replacement had this issue. i use either wired now or use a usb wifi adapter. Again if I can manage to stay within warranty I will replace it with something better.

Now for the better stuff.

I really like the gt750m nvidia card, it can handle most games at the same graphics of todays 7th gen consoles.

Review about ASUS N550JV-DB72T 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

First off, I bought this laptop from another vendor, and cannot comment on Amazons shipping or service. However, after owning this product for about a month, I can comment on the laptop.

Pros:
-Top-of-the-line 4th gen Core i7 processor
-Brand new, dedicated video card
-absolutely massive hard drive
-keyboard w/ backlight
-Full HD touchscreen display with IPS technology (very wide viewing angles)
-excellent build quality

Cons:
-hard drive is only 5400 RPM
-keyboard backlight is not perfect
-gets a little warm with heavy use
-it doesnt make me pancakes

Conclusion:
This really is an excellent laptop, especially for the price. For a little more than $1000, it offers you a slew of high-end components inside a well-built, attractive casing. For some more money, you could get a laptop with a higher resolution screen (Macbook Pro Retina) or with slightly better components (Razer Blade) but theres really no reason to unless youre a hardcore gamer or have a need for ultra-high resolution displays. The touchscreen makes Windows 8 infinitely more enjoyable, and makes me wonder why people ever complained about it. The hard drive, while massive, is a bit slow, and seems to occasionally bottleneck the system during some intensive tasks. However, during most use cases, this is a non-issue, and is easily rectified( Just buy yourself a faster hard drive). .

Features:

  • Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz
  • 8 GB SO-DIMM RAM
  • 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • 15.6" 16:9 HD (1366x768)/ IPS FHD (1920x1080) LED Backlight Non-Glare LCD Panel
  • Windows 8

Fujitsu Fi 6140Z Document Scanner PA03630 B005

Fujitsu fi-6140Z Document Scanner (PA03630-B005)

We have used Fujitsu scanners since 2005. We are switching from flatbed sheet feeders to this model for more desktop real estate. Havent been disappointed yet.

Review about Fujitsu fi-6140Z Document Scanner (PA03630-B005)

Both fi-6130 & fi-6140 are great little scanners. These are small footprint high-end scanners with lots of might from a small package. Great for small/mid sized businesses and maybe even larger applications. These are professional-level scanners meant for business use, so if you want a good scanner for your SOHO, then this might be a good choice or maybe it is out of your price range. ...You do get what you pay for... I am an IT professional and have worked with both the fi-6130 & fi-6140 and these are great machines. For advanced home users that are technically savvy, this may be a good choice. For the typical home user, you may not want to bother with this unit and the cost of it.
.

Features:

  • Blazing 60ppm / 120ipm scanning in color, grayscale, and monochrome.
  • Full color 300 dpi scanning at 40ppm / 80ipm.
  • Ultrasonic driven Intelligent MultiFeed Function (iMFF).
  • Advanced Paper Protection Technology.
  • Robust 50-page Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet Fed Scanner For PC

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC

I have never had a dedicated document scanner before. In the past, I used the Auto-document feeder on my all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machines to scan documents into adobe acrobat. That meant for each batch of papers, I needed to set the color/resolution/paper size/quality settings and then work through Acrobat in order to save each file. It worked, but it was slow going.

Then I bought this new scansnap 1500, based on the ratings of the earlier model (the scansnap 510). I installed only the main program to my computer (the software also includes OCR programs, organizational programs, and acrobat 9, which I already have). I hooked up the scanner and stuck in a stack of old notes I took from some college courses--some notes were in color, some were b&w, some on two sides, some on one side, and some of the pages were upside down. I hit the only button on the machine (SCAN), and to my sheer amazement, it started flying through the stack of notes without any additional prompts or effort. It then automatically saved my file as a pdf--all of the pages were in order, color pages were in color, b&w pages were in b&w, etc. The only issue I noticed was that if there were any marks whatsoever on the back side of my note papers, it included those blank pages in the file.

Review about Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC

I purchased this scanner as a first step in creating an electronic filing system for a home office. As I accumulated 20 filing cabinet drawers of paper documents going paperless seemed to be an answer.

Purchase of the Fujitsu S1500 was based on the numerous 5 star reviews. I am reasonably tech literate and have used the scanner for about 2 weeks. Here are my initial impressions:

Pros -

1. Speed: This scanner seems blazingly fast. Not a resource hog. Will scan duplex 20-25ppm at default settings on Win2K/1. 8mhz/1gb platform.

2. Scan quality very good at all settings.

3. Size and looks: Small desk footprint. Looks great open or closed.

4. Excellent paper feeding as long as documents are same size and 20# or greater paper weight.

Cons -

1. NO TWAIN DRIVER. I knew this going in but did not appreciate how much this would cripple the device in day to day use. Let me explain. I had envisioned creating a virtual file cabinet in my computer using Windows Directory/Folder/File system then scanning my paper documents into this system as pdf files. The problem is that the native Fujitsu software does not let you append an existing pdf file!!!

As an example take a file for utility bills. D:/Home Expenses/Utilities/Gas_Electric. pdf. You can easily scan in all prior bills(limited by 50 sheet ADF)and a pdf with one page for each bill will be created. But if you had more than 50 prior bills or when next months bill comes then the next scan you perform to include these new documents will create a new pdf and does not allow the option of appending this current scan to the existing pdf. As you can see one could easily end up with 1000s of individual pdf documents in your filing system. The work around is to launch Adobe Acrobat (not reader) and use it to open the old composite pdf and use Acrobat to append the newly created pdf to the prior file. This work around takes longer than scanning in a 30 page document. Twain based scanners easily work with existing windows file structure and allow you to append an existing pdf without invoking Acrobat. .

Features:

  • One button searchable PDF creation
  • Intelligent paper feed detection
  • Blazing 20ppm color scanning
  • 50-page Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
  • Comes with Adobe Acrobat X Standard
